As such, the UK’s manufacturing site based in Larne Co. Antrim is expanding to a second factory to further deliver for global clients, already employing more than 300 colleagues across both locations. To support this delivery, they have created a key appointment on their Senior Leadership Team for a Head of Engineering to direct all engineering activities within the site’s impressive manufacturing operations. This includes oversight of equipment, facility and utility maintenance, automation and controls as well as process engineering, to ensure engineering excellence and that site objectives are met.

The Head of Engineering will lead and develop a large engineering team and will be responsible for strategy development as well as implementation of systems and processes to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the site. They will oversee the delivery of highly technical and complex engineering projects creating and developing production machinery, supporting new product introductions and technology transfers, leading continuous improvement efforts across the site. They will direct all acquisition, installation and operation of systems and will be accountable for the finances of the function including developing capital activities. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to establish networks with engineering peers across other global sites and with clients, resulting in further expertise and a richer experience for the individual.

The successful candidate will have the following skills and experience:

  • Significant experience in leading and developing an engineering function within a manufacturing setting and of working as part of an effective senior leadership team.
  • Ability to develop a strong management team, with proven leadership skills based on integrity, empathy, empowering and inspiring others to achieve beyond their limits.
  • Experience in a pharmaceutical, medical device, chemical manufacturing or other highly regulated environment is highly desirable.
  • Experience with metric creation to lead continuous improvement efforts and Reliability-Centred-Maintenance / Equipment Reliability ensuring an appropriate level of availability and reliability of equipment (Asset Life Cycle Management).
  • Experience with implementation of highly technical or involved engineering projects in the creation and development of automatic, semi-automatic and manually controlled production machines and auxiliary equipment.
  • Previous experience with plant systems typically found in pharmaceutical GMP production, including clean steam, Water for Injection, autoclaves etc., solution filling or packaging equipment would be a distinct advantage.
  • Experience managing the finances of the engineering function, analyse financial information, prepare and manage operating and capital budgets, and monitors revenues and expenditures to contain costs.
  • Demonstrates strategic thinking and planning, with the ability to drive company strategy through operational performance.
  • Ability to manage others and to build relationships in a matrix environment, to collaborate and to work effectively in a team in order to achieve organisational goals.
  • A relevant third level engineering qualification i.e. mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or industrial engineering.
